Palinuro and surroundings
Located in the heart of the Cilento National Park and Vallo di Diano, Palinuro, a hamlet of the Commune of Centola that is named after the legendary Enea diver is the most important seaside resort of Cilento, and among the favorite tourist destinations in the province of Salerno . This wonderful site is one of the favorite resorts of the national and international jet set, which land here both by land and by sea. The origin of the name Palinuro was recaptured by modern scholars to the Greek "palin" (again) and "ouros" (wind), pointing to a head that made it in a sense to spark. The suggestive story about the Palinuro jumper, however, is reported by Virgil in Eneide. Every year, in Palinuro, towards the end of August, the "Night of Myth" is recalled in honor of the valorous feather, immortalized many centuries before the Virginian masterpiece also by Homer in the Odyssey when the mythical Ulysses wanted it with him his tormented journey to Ithaca. Theatrical transposition of one of the most intriguing myths of antiquity takes place on the Mingard Beach, and involves hundreds of costume costumes. Pineda is the "five-star" resort of Cilentan coast, thanks to its crystal clear sea, its exterminated beach, to its wonderful cliff, made of natural caves and beautiful bays. Nature lovers will be fascinated by evergreen cloves and ivy, but the typical flower of this location is Primula Palinuri, bouquets of yellow-golden flowers with green rosettes of rustic leaves, living in the crevices of vertical vertical cliffs the sea. For some years the Primula di Palinuro is the official symbol of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano.Palinuro is full of archaeological finds. The site was inhabited already in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the finds in the caves located along Cape Palinuro and at the foot of Molpa hill, dating back to the middle and upper Paleolithic, and the neolithic settlement brought to light in San Paolo. On the Molpa, completely abandoned in 1464, the ruins of the castle still stand. In the area called "Spiaggia della Ficocella", an antiquarium was set up, which retains the finds found in the caves and necropolises of the hills of Primitive and Greek age. Recent tourist development has not distorted Palinuro's urban layout, which has its own current fortune exclusively for its natural beauty. The caves of Capo Palinuro are geomorphological and ecological study by various groups of marine speleologists. In total there are 32 caves of which the most important is the Blue Grotto, which is accessed by sea, characterized by a bright blue color due to the presence of a siphon (about 20 meters deep) that allows the light irradiation solar inside. Extremely suggestive is the Grotto of the Monks, so called for the presence of dark brown stalagmites, in the forms invoking monks in prayer. Very beautiful is the Crib Grotto, whose name already says everything. Interestingly from a strictly scientific point of view, the Bones of the Bones or Prehistoric, characterized by the presence of bones of prehistoric animals. Finally, the wonderful natural arch at the mouth of the Mingard River, in a beautiful creek, between two beaches. All caves can only be reached by sea. The Natural Arch cares for a beach that is an authentic jewel, along which a river harbor opens up for tiny small fishing boats. Very beautiful, finally, the beach of Good Sleep, right in front of the islet of the Rabbit. At the foot of Palinuro lies the town of Centola, born around the Benedictine Badia of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built in 1207 by a group of Italian-Greek monks. The village expanded, enriching itself in the following centuries of numerous artistic and monumental testimonies. We note the Romanesque bell tower of the Hagia Sophia Chapel (13th century); the Convent of the Capuchins (1619), which houses a baroque altar in carved walnut wood, canvases and statues of wooden saints, built between the 16th and 19th centuries; the church of San Nicola di Mira, built in the sixteenth century. They also visit the other two parts of Centola, one of which is completely abandoned: San Nicola and San Severino di Centola. The uninhabited part of St. Nicholas has the characteristic features of the Cilentan village, with its concentric streets, its square with its mother church, its slate roofed houses. Climbing for a narrow salinity, it reaches San Severino di Centola, a village overlooking the "Devil's Gorges", a horrible sloping hillside between two narrow rock walls, at the bottom of which is the bed of the Mingard. San Severino preserves its medieval structure intact, with the summit in the Castle which has not been remodeled. All around, narrow streets, houses clinging to each other, the main square, the church.

Tutto top. Da tornarci.
