Cirella and surroundings

Cirella, a small fraction of Diamond, currently equipped seaside resort, is rich in history and artifacts that testify to the importance of this thriving city of Magna Greek name Cerillae. Upper Paleolithic settlements are present in the territory at the fraction of the rock cave of St. John. It was one of the first cities in the area founded by Ausoni and it wrote Strabo, Diodoro Siculo and Silio Italico, who claims to have been destroyed by Hannibal through his general Annone in 203 BC, for their loyalty to Rome. It became an important commercial center thanks to exports between Rome and Ancient Greece. There arose temples and Roman villas, the imperial age, whose ruins are still visible. The city was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The parish church of St. Mary de Flores has a medieval capitals of Corinthian style, used as a Paschal candle holder, a wooden bust of the Madonna and Child of the Century. Towards the coast you can see the islet of Cirella and topped by the ruins of ancient fortifications built to prevent the landing of the Moors. Looking up into the interior, on a hill, you can see the ruins of old Cirella destroyed by the French fleet in 1806. They are interesting in this site, besides the beautiful landscape, the ruins of a castle and the remains of a church with a bell tower Romanesque and residues of frescoes. On the slopes of the hill it was found several necropolis as well known as Mausoleum of Cirella, a monumental tomb of Roman times and used as a Christian church building that then become storage of agricultural products.
