Castellammare di Stabia and surroundings
Nestled in a natural basin of the Gulf of Naples, Castellammare di Stabia is the gateway to the Sorrentine Peninsula. The city in fact enjoys a strategic position to visit the major attractions of Campania, such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, Sorrento, the Coast Amalfitana, Capri and Ischia. Castellammare di Stabia owes its name to a medieval castle on the sea (Castrum ad mare), a term to which was added the name of the ancient city of Stabiae. The castle, which is now located along the main road to Sorrento, was built by the Sorrentines in order to defend their duchy from their enemies. Today the castle is privately owned and can only be admired from the outside. The city of Stabia, thanks to its splendid geographical position and its particularly mild climate, was inhabited since the seventh century BC; it was then destroyed by Silla and then finally buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD which also affected the nearby towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum. On the hill of Varano, in a panoramic position, the remains of splendid Roman villas survived the eruption: Otium villas of considerable size, with vast living quarters, thermal structures, arcades and beautifully decorated nymphaeums. Two excellent examples, which can be visited today, are Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna. Villa S. Marco, so called because of the proximity of a chapel dedicated to St. Mark, it dates back to the early Augustan age (end of the 1st century BC) and preserves its architectural structure, bearing witness to the luxurious living in Roman times. The spa area, the monumental pool with exedra and ambulatories, the hospitalia finely decorated with frescoes, as well as the singular upper garden surrounded by twisted columns are evidence of an eclectic and very original taste. a mythological subject found in the triclinium. The villa covers about 2500 m2, adapting to the shape of the hill whose course it follows. Even in this villa the decorative apparatuses testify not only the high standard of living that had to take place here, but also the extremely refined taste of a client high-class and demanding. But Castellammare is not only known for its luxurious Roman villas.
Also famous are its historic shipyards, the large marina and the unmissable biscuits. In addition to those covered with a glaze of sugar, sold in the famous blue paper, we must not forget the biscuits, already produced before the Angevin domination and destined to supply the sailors. Known as the City of Waters, Castellammare has 28 natural springs, with mineral waters characterized by different compositions and healing virtues. The waters flow from the rocks of Mount Faito and give life to important spas.
From the fresh sea breeze of the coast, thanks to the Faito cable car, you can reach this pristine mountain in just a few minutes. From the "Belvedere" you can enjoy an enchanting view of the gulfs of Naples and Salerno and on a clear day the eye can reach the Circeo promontory, the Pontine archipelago and the very distant temples of Paestum.
